How to sign into Keynes
Your personal access code and chosen two-factor authentication method are required to authenticate and log onto Keynes. The following step-by-step instructions walk through the sign-in process for Keynes. Text that appears in italics should be replaced by the type of information being requested (for example, where you see access code you should type your personal Keynes access code.
- Download and install SecureCRT, a terminal emulator supported by UW-IT.
- Connect to keynes.u.washington.edu using SecureCRT
- You must either be using a UW network connection or Husky OnNet
- Type your Keynes access code in the Usercode field
- Pres <Tab> or <Return>
- Type your password. (You will not be able to see the characters you are typing)
- Press <Enter>
- Choose from your available 2FA options and type the Duo passcode you receive
Note: To send information to the system, such as when logging in, use the enter key on your numeric keypad or hit Control+J if you don't have a numeric keypad (such as when using a laptop).
After logging in the UW Technology Main Menu is displayed, unless this is the first time you have signed on with this access code, or if it has been 60 days since you last changed your password, in which case you will be directed to the password change screen.
Two-factor authentication
Keynes requires you to authenticate with
two-factor authentication (2FA). After logging into your Keynes account with your access code and password, you will be asked to authenticate using your selected 2FA device.
Common problems signing in to Keynes
Message reading The password you have entered is invalid
- Double-check your password. Keynes passwords are not case-sensitive, and can only contain letters and numbers.
- If you have questions or problems, contact the UW Technology Service Center.
Message reading This usercode has been suspended
- Usercodes can be suspended for many reasons ranging from lack of use, repeated failed logins, or other security concerns.
- If you have questions or problems, contact the UW Technology Service Center.
Message reading Usercode may not be used for logon
- The usercode you have entered is a "secondary" or "Switch" usercode
- Log on using your primary usercode
- If you have questions or problems, contact the UW Technology Service Center.
Doesn't accept password, but no error messages and the cursor moves back up to usercode field.
- Make sure you are using SecureCRT, the only supported terminal emulator for Keynes
- Make sure you're pressing the Send/Enter key on the number pad
- Your cap lock is off and number lock is on
- Try to use Control-J instead of enter to send information

Passwords for Keynes
About Keynes passwords
- Passwords must be at least 4 characters long, are not case sensitive, and can only contain letters and numbers.
- A password change is required every 60 days.
- If a password is not changed after 60 days, it expires and you will be required to change your password upon login.
If you forget your Keynes password, contact the UW Technology Service Center to get a new temporary password.
Changing your Keynes password
- After signing into Keynes, if a password change is required you will be redirected to the password change screen.
- Type your current password. (You will not be able to see the characters you are typing)
- Press <Tab>
- Type a new, unique password that you have not used before on Keynes
- Press <Enter>
Tips for password changes
- When any error occurs on the password change screen, retype all passwords, starting at the beginning.
- If you initiate a manual password change but then decide do not wish to change your password after the password change screen appears, type "X" in the box at the lower right and press <Enter> or <Ctrl + J>.
