UW-IT JupyterHub for Teaching Hub Request tool

Overview

Users of the UW-IT JupyterHub for Teaching service can now request course Hubs and view the status of their hubs directly from a course page in UW Canvas.

An overview of the JupyterHub for Teaching service can be found on the service overview page. We also have a some best practices that are worth reviewing before using the service.

This tool can be accessed without installing it in your course by clicking on the standard "UW Resources" tool available to all courses and looking in the "Tools" section (note: people with a student role in the course will only see the link if there is an active hub for that course). If you would like to install this tool for direct access, you can follow the instructions below.

We will continue to support our UW Connect request form for those who prefer to use that process.

Enabling the tool in Canvas course navigation

From your Canvas course page, navigate to "Settings" and then click the "Navigation" tab. Scroll down to the hidden apps until you find "UW-IT JupyterHubs for Teaching" and either click and drag it into the active apps section, or click on the triple dot menu and enable it from there, then click "Save". Note, if you do not see "Settings" in your course navigation, you will need to confirm that you have sufficient permissions in the Canvas course. Also if you have multiple courses, you can request multiple JupyterHubs.

Using the UW-IT JupyterHubs for Teaching request tool

Once enabled, the current status for a course JupyterHub (if any) is displayed when launching the tool. If no hub exists, and the course is eligible for a Hub, and your role in the course is sufficient, you can request a new hub. Detailed information about the various options is available on our quickstart page. After requesting a hub, anytime you visit the tool, you will see the current status of your request. Once your hub is deployed, URLs for accessing the Hub will also become available.
