Chat Retention and Deletion

This page explains how long chats are retained, how they are deleted, and the limited situations when chat history may be accessed.

How Long Chats Are Retained

Standard Mode (Chat History)

Purple keeps inactive chats for 180 days. This lets you:

Inactive chats include both the content provided by the user (such as messages and attachments) and the responses generated by Purple.

Note: This retention period is longer than some other forms of transitory content (for example, Microsoft Teams chats are deleted after 30 days) because Purple is more effective and provides stronger business value to the UW when users can return to a chat within a reasonable timeframe.

Incognito Mode (No Chat History)

Incognito chats are not saved. When you close the chat, it disappears—there is no chat history, and nothing is carried forward to future chats.

To start an incognito chat, open a new chat, then click the Incognito Chat icon (to the right of the selected AI model)

When Chats Are Deleted

Chats can be deleted in two ways: automatically (based on inactivity) and manually (by you).

Automatic Deletion

Chats are automatically deleted after 180 days of inactivity. Each time a new message is added to an existing chat, the 180-day retention period starts over from that date.

Manual Deletion

You can delete a chat at any time. To do so, click the three dots (...) next to the chat, then select Delete

Recommendation

Delete chats that you no longer need.

Purple Is Not a System of Record

Purple is not meant for long-term storage. If you need to keep anything from a chat (drafts, notes, analyses, etc.), save it in a personal or shared team space (for example, OneDrive, SharePoint, or Google Drive).

Chat History Access

Access to chat history is strictly controlled and limited to specific authorized situations, such as:

Any access is logged and auditable, and there is no general or informal ability to browse user conversations.
