Purple gives you control over your conversations. You can review, delete, and manage your chat history at any time, helping you organize your work and maintain control over the information stored in your account.
This article explains how to manage your chats. For information on retention periods, automatic deletion, and access controls, refer to Chat Retention and Deletion.
Understanding Chat History
By default, Purple saves your conversations so you can return to them later. Saved chats allow you to:
- Continue previous conversations
- Review past prompts and responses
- Reference work you have completed
- Organize information across multiple sessions
Access to chat history is strictly controlled and limited to specific authorized situations, such as:
- Providing user support (that you request)
- Complying with applicable legal obligations (including public record requests)
- Responding to a cybersecurity event
Any access is logged and auditable, and there is no general or informal ability to browse user conversations.
Viewing Your Chat History
To view a previous conversation:
- Sign in to Purple.
- Open the Chat History panel.
- Select the conversation you want to reopen.
- Continue the conversation or review previous messages.
Each conversation is stored separately, making it easier to find and revisit previous work.
Deleting Individual Conversations
If you no longer need a conversation, you can delete it.
To delete a chat:
- Locate the conversation in your Chat History.
- Hover over the chat and click the ellipsis (...) to display the options menu.
- Select Delete. Once deleted, the conversation is removed from your chat history and can no longer be accessed.
Using Incognito Chat
Purple also provides an Incognito Chat option for conversations you do not want saved to your chat history.
To enable Incognito chat, click the
(Incognito Chat) icon on the top of the Purple window.
When Incognito Chat is enabled:
- The conversation does not appear in your saved chat history.
- The session is not available for future reference.
- You can use Purple without creating a persistent conversation record.
Incognito Chat can be useful when:
- Exploring a one-time question
- Working through temporary ideas
- Testing prompts
- Discussing a topic you do not need to revisit later
Best Practices
When using Purple:
- Keep conversations organized by topic.
- Delete conversations that are no longer needed.
- Use Incognito Chat for temporary or exploratory discussions.
- Save important outputs to approved University systems when appropriate.
- Do not rely on Purple as a long-term records repository.
