Claude for Education at UW

Frequently Asked Questions for Claude subscribers

About your subscription

What is Claude for Education?

Claude for Education is Anthropic’s institutional offering of Claude for universities. UW buys it as an organization, and UWIT makes it available to faculty, staff, and sponsored students through UWare.

Your subscription includes:

  • Claude Chat for writing, analysis, brainstorming, and research support
  • Claude Code for coding help, within usage limits
  • Claude Cowork for delegating multi-step work, within usage limits shared with Claude Code

You sign in with your UW NetID through single sign-on. UW manages your account, not a personal account.

What is the difference between Standard and Premium seats?

Claude Standard and Premium Seats

Seat

Best for

Included usage

Standard

Typical day-to-day use by faculty, staff, and students

About 2.5 times the five-hour allowance of the consumer Pro plan

Premium

Researchers, developers, regular Claude Code users, and other heavy users

Comparable to the consumer Max 5x plan

Anthropic does not publish exact token counts or message limits, so capacity is described by comparison and by who each seat is designed for.

How is this different from a personal Claude Pro or Max account?

Anthropic uses Pro as the baseline for public usage comparisons. Standard is approximately two and a half times the Pro five-hour allowance, while Premium is comparable to Max 5x.

A UWare Claude for Education seat is different in these ways:

  • It operates under commercial terms and a data processing addendum between Anthropic and UW, and Anthropic does not train its models on UW data.
  • You sign in through UW single sign-on.
  • UW can manage accounts and apply organization-wide settings.

Because the account belongs to UW, use it for UW work. Keep personal projects on a personal account.

Ordering and managing seats

How do I get a subscription?

Order through the UW Software (UWare) Catalog. Your request is recorded and billed through UWIT’s normal ordering process. Once your order is processed, your NetID is assigned a seat, and you can sign in to Claude with UW single sign-on. Review UWare's best practices for departments to learn more about UWare subscriptions.

Can students have subscriptions?

Yes. UW faculty can purchase subscriptions for students. A few things to know:

  • A valid UW funding source (worktag) is required.
  • The faculty member who purchases the seat is responsible for managing it, including reassigning or canceling it.
  • Student eligibility and enrollment status may need to be confirmed.

Usage and limits

Will I be charged based on how much I use Claude?

No. Your seat price is the whole cost. Each seat includes a usage allowance, and there are no per-message or per-token charges on top of it.

What happens when I reach my limit?

You see a notice showing when your allowance resets. New requests in Chat, Cowork, and Claude Code pause for you until the current five-hour window or weekly allowance resets. Nothing is billed, other users are not affected, and your work and conversation history stay available.

Can I buy extra usage?

Extra usage is an optional organization setting that is off by default and is not currently part of the standard UWare service. Plan around the allowance in your seat.

Claude Code and Cowork are included. Are they enough for heavy development work?

Claude Code and Cowork are included in every seat, but they draw on the same usage allowance as Chat. Light and occasional coding use fits comfortably in a Standard seat. People who use Claude Code heavily and daily should choose the Premium plan. Even so, sustained, full-time development work may reach the limits of an included seat.

Models and features

Which Claude models can I use?

Your seat includes Anthropic’s current models, including Opus and Fable. New generally available models are added during the term without a change to seat pricing. Anthropic retires older model versions after a successor is available and gives at least 60 days’ notice before retiring a publicly released model.

Some models and features launch in beta, as admin opt-in settings, or under additional terms. These may not be available to you right away.

What Models are Available

Claude Models Available

Can I use Fable?

Yes.

Can my school or department change which features are available to us?

Model access, policies, and other settings are currently managed centrally by UWIT for the whole organization. Department-level or course-level customization is not available at this time. Contact the service team if you have a specific need.

API and developer access

Does my subscription include API access?

No. A Claude for Education seat covers Claude Chat, Claude Code, and Cowork. It does not include API access or API credits.

How do I use Claude through an API in my project?

API usage is set up and billed separately, based on consumption. UW’s recommended routes for API use are:

  • Azure AI Foundry, available today through a dedicated Azure subscription provided by UWIT
  • Purple Gateway, expected to become available soon

Privacy and your data

Does Anthropic train Claude on my conversations?

No. Under UW’s education agreement, Anthropic does not train its models on UW data, including your conversations.

Can I use Claude with student records or other regulated data?

Anthropic’s education terms include provisions designed to support FERPA-regulated use, but responsibility for compliance remains with UW. UW’s Privacy, Security, and Legal offices are still determining which kinds of data and use cases are approved.

Can UW see my conversations?

This is an institutional account, so treat it as a work system rather than a private space. Anthropic provides UW administrators with audit logs of administrative changes and with tools that can make conversation content accessible to the organization. UW is finalizing the policy on whether and when those tools are used, who may use them, and how public records rules apply.

Conversations may also be subject to public records and other legal requirements that apply to UW work.

How long are my conversations kept?

By default, all content, conversations, and artifacts are deleted after 365 days.
